« Against the Grain: Michéa’s Radical Philosophy »

Résumé

Claiming to embrace left-wing values, French essayist Jean-Claude Michéa appears to be a conservative or a right-wing thinker because of his moral critique. Such a presentation is questionable because of its reductionism and its bias but it illustrates the common representation of a radical thinker who can but appear as reactionary when his ideas are envisaged from a viewpoint where the political world is split between the Left and Right, a division which Michéa has himself castigated. What follows aims at presenting his ideas before discussing how they may fit into the contemporary landscape as defined by its ‘droitisation’ according to the word made popular by the journalist E. Dupin. In his 2007 essay, À Droite toute, ‘droitisation’ (i.e. the turn to the Right in politics) designates the political recomposition of the last two decades along a divide between societal issues (insecurity and immigration), rather than economic ones. The ‘droitisation’ found its latest expression when N. Sarkozy was elected .
