Ancient ships from the harbour of Naples

Résumé

Thanks to a long-term programme of preventive urban archaeology promoted by the Archaeological Superintendence of the Italian Ministry of Culture, the city of Naples has rediscovered its millenary connection with the sea. The construction of the metro lines 1 and 6 allowed the archaeologists to reconstruct the maritime landscape of Neapolis from the Hellenistic up to the Late Roman times. The excavations in Piazza Municipio, near the Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino) castle, revealed an important sector of the ancient harbour with its infrastructures some of which were very well preserved. The remains of eight shipwrecks dated from the end of the 2nd century BCE up to the 3rd century AD offered a wide rage of ships types in use in the harbour of the city allowing improving our knowledge in the Ancient shipbuilding techniques and giving the evidence of new and unknown ship types related to specific fonctions.
