Sutiles naves in Istria: preliminary results from the study of the ship finds from Zambratija and Pula (Istria County, Croatia)

Abstract

This communication presents the preliminary results of the study of three shipwrecks recently discovered in Istria (Croatia). The first shipwreck was found in the cove of Zambratija, south of Cape Savudrija. It is dated to the Bronze Age and, till now, represents the most ancient example of a sewn vessel in the Mediterranean. The others two shipwrecks were discovered in the Pula city centre during a rescue excavation in wet environment. These two sewn ships (Pula 1 and Pula 2), dated to the Roman Empire, were abandoned within the harbour basin of the ancient Roman colony of Pula.
