Le savoir étymologique, enjeu scientifique et objet d'enseignement (années 1880-1920)
Résumé
In 1880s France, etymological knowledge fueled various debates in the field of linguistics, such as the growing distinction between historical linguistics and philology or the possibility of reforming French orthography. At the same time, etymology appeared on the French syllabus in primary schools. Using scientific writings, textbooks and archive material produced by pupils and teachers from a Parisian school, we bring to light connections between etymology as a scientific issue and as a part of school knowledge. We also attempt to identify reasons for its disappearance from both areas in the 1920s.
