Un Peintre Saheb Mansab? Une Reconsidération de la Carrière de 'Ali Qoli Jebādār
Résumé
This paper discusses the life, signatures, and career of Safavid artist 'Ali Qoli Jebādār, who was active in Iran in the second half of the seventeenth century. We are proposing a new account of his artistic life, by showing that the unknown origin of the artist may not really be a major concern when attempting to understand his artistic career. By analysing some of the different signatures that are attributed to the artist, this article will show that 'Ali Qoli Jebādār was not only a court artist (like his contemporary Mohammad Zaman), but he probably also had a mansab and an important position in the Safavid administration.
