Augustin is far from being the first Latin author who have quoted and commented upon the logion concerning the blasphemy against the Spirit (Matth. 12, 31-32 and //). The preserved texts which are previous to him contain around thirty significant places, here studied in a exhaustive way. Their contexts of interpretation are essentially two-fold: the penitential theology, in response to the Novatians misusing the logion; the anti-Arian controversies dealing with the divine nature of the Christ and the Holy Spirit. Most of the time, the Fathers do not remove the logion from its matthean and marcian context, namely the pericope on Beelzebul, but draw from it the keys of its interpretation and take into account all the segments of this complex word: universality of forgiveness; dichotomy between the Son of the man and the holy Spirit; definitive unforgiveness of blasphemy. The evaluation of these texts as possible sources of the Augustinian thought proved however disappointing. The radically new perspective opened by the bishop of Hippo, from an external conception of the blasphemy against the Spirit as sin which the Church cannot forgive, or as objectively definable heresy, to an interiorized conception as final unrepentance of the post-baptismal sinner, do not seem to have a background in the earlier authors.
