"Aimez-vous Brahms..." Zur Brahms-Rezeption in Frankreich um 1900

Nicolas Dufetel

Abstract

This article focuses on the reception of Brahms in France during the 20 years following his death in 1897 (obituaries, concerts, critics). It summarizes the role of Hugues Imbert, Armand Parent, Louis Diémer, and Alfred Cortot in the reception of his works. It also recalls the history of Françoise Sagan famous novel "Aimez-vous Brahms..." (1959) and investigates Brahms' election at the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris in 1896. Two unknown documents (an administrative document on a letter) are published of the first time. In his letter to the members of the Académie, Brahms expresses his interest for French musicians (Cherubini, Méhul, Boieldieu, Bizet), but he is sorry not to be able to write in French.
