Cultural services provided by agroecosystems: opportunity or source of conflicts? Examples in the Loire valley vineyard (France)

Résumé

France is the third largest vineyard in the world after China and Spain, with 800.000 ha. It is one of the three biggest wine producers, with Italy and Spain (according to the International Organization of Vine and Wine). On the national scale, the Loire valley vineyard is the third one, according to its production (more than 3 million hectoliters). Vineyards are first agroecosystems offering provisioning services, above all grapes used in France to produce wine. But nowadays they offer also more and more cultural services. Indeed, they form landscapes, which are appreciated for their aesthetic aspects, considered as nice landscapes. Consequently, they are requested as environment; they constitute a seduction argument to attract new inhabitants, a criterion in the choice of the living place. In the same way, they become more and more places of wine tourism and wine leisure activities. This attraction of the vineyards for tourists and new inhabitants is an opportunity for the territory, more specifically for the wine growers. They can increase direct selling of wine and diversify their incomes, by welcoming tourists. But there is also some conflicts due to the difficulties to conciliate different services, different linked activities. Some tourists and local residents reproach wine growers for doing noise and using inputs, especially if it is chemical inputs: it constitutes disservices associated to vineyards. At the same time, some wine growers reproach tourists and local residents to disturb them in their work, when they cross their vineyards, to pollute with their waste. They also have the feeling to be like “in zoo”, being observed by tourists, who come to discover the agricultural practices. In some vineyards, some solutions are proposed to reduce tensions, at least concerning the relationship between local residents and win growers. It is for example neighborly charter: wine growers commit to inform local residents living near their plots before treating their vines. It is only a partial solution, a step towards more dialogs.
