Different genres, different ways of reading

Abstract

Poetry exchanges along with epistolary writing contribute to social and personal intercourse. However, when would one choose to write a letter rather than a poem? And when would one prefer to send a pentasyllabic poem over a tetrasyllabic one? The analysis of cases from the Han, Wei and Jin dynasties helps distinguish these rather dissimilar means of communication at the time.
