The School at Lyon after Florus' Death

Pierre Chambert-Protat

Résumé

After Alcuin's and Charlemagne's trusted friend Leidrat was appointed as bishop of Lyon (798), the cultural activity highly increased in the city, throughout the bishoprics of Leidrat's successors Agobard, Amolo and Remy, especially around the now well-known figure of deacon Florus. Abundantly preserved material related to these prominent figures help us understand who does what, how and when, during this “heroic age”. However, after Florus dies (c. 855-860), followed by Remy (875) and Manno of Saint-Oyen (893), no succeeding prominent figures emerges and we gradually lose our grasp on the Lyonnais milieu. Does that mean the Lyonnais school went extinct? In the absence of high-profile intellectual actors, what evidence do we have on intellectual activity? In this paper, I suggest some frameworks that can carefully and reliably assess the situation in the school at Lyon after the death of Florus.
