Street facade society? Les réseaux sociaux à Pompéi au filtre de la propagande politique

Résumé

Would it be possible to catch a glimpse of social relations reading Pompeian electoral inscriptions (programmata)? The present article aims at answering positively to this question by interpreting the ties between the candidates and their supporters (rogatores) and between the candidates themselves, revealing their alliances. After a critical reappraisal of the historiographical debate, mainly focusing on the latest main works written between the end of the 1980’s and the beginning of the 2000’s, the programmata are interpreted as propagandistic texts which scope is to make the reader believe in the written message and make him vote accordingly. Based on a careful re-interpretation of electoral inscriptions and on their mapping, a case-study focusing on A. Trebius Valens’ political career is presented: this micro-historical example allows to deepen and complete pre-existing models.
