Cultural Life at Villa Lante di Bagnaia (1683-1696). Family, gardens and sociability

Résumé

In this essay I examine the practice of the villeggiatura of the Lante della Rovere family in their villa of Bagnaia, which was redesigned in the French style to accommodate the performance of music in a theatrical context that responded to their desire to display their allegiance to the French nation. Exploring the performative character of the space, and particularly of the garden, I show how space and the performance of music could be considered as an instrumental element in fostering sociability.
