Jarres islamiques estampées importées dans le sud de la France (Provence et Languedoc) au Moyen Âge.

Résumé

In south of France, the distribution of islamic jars in the 9th-10th centuries is essentially attested by shipwrecked cargoes off the provençal coast, and in the 11th century by the recent (and still rare) identifications of sicilian painted amphoras in Provence. The next centuries are better documented on sites of consumption : stamped jars (tinajas) are recognized on a large number of Provençal sites in contexts going of the 12th century until the 17th. These products are not rare in Provence, even if they are always uncommon, and the diversity of paste advocates several production sites, which would divide up between the Maghreb, south of Spain and Portugal. In Marseilles, in the 12th and 13th centuries, it is recently established that this decorated and glazed tinajas is often accompanied by big basins, stereotyped and decorated with « guillochés » cords on naked paste, most probably native of Al Andaluz. Others finally would emanate from the North of Africa and seem to propose more varied types and treatments. An investigation led in Provence and Languedoc allows to draw up a cartography of the points of finds of this ornamental vases of big volume and to examine their various contexts of discoveries. In a second time, from “the example from Marseilles”, it is question of verifying if, on the majority of sites and in the same periods, jars printed are associated with these utilitarian basins ; or if, on the contrary, this situation exist only in some particular cases as Marseilles.
