"The earliest masters of the Paris Clockmakers'Corporation : a new account based on archival sources and surviving works"

Catherine Cardinal

Abstract

The statutes promulgated for the Corporation in 1544 give the names of seven clockmakers to whom, thanks to archival documents, some fifteen more can be added. One list of craftsmen practising in shops in Paris (Archives nationales) allows the importance of the Paris trade to be estimated in the second quarter of the 16th century. Supplemented by inventories, contracts and surviving clocks, it reveals the important place held by small clockmaking, showing the taste of a wealthy clientele for personal time keepers.
