A worked antler assemblage from romm L8 of Argilos Northern Greece (400-350 BC)
Résumé
The excavation of room L8 of building L in the ancient city of Argilos in northern Greece uncovered
sixteen worked fragments of red deer antlers, dated by pottery to 400 to 350 B.C. A detailed analysis
of the types and positions of manufacturing marks on the antlers revealed that the exploitation of specific
parts of the antler incorporated a reduction process in order to produce particular types of bars
and plates. This article describes this process and the tools used to cut the antlers, as well as the in situ
fabrication of artifacts.
