The Political Economy of Regulation Theory: Toward a Creative Integration of Social Sciences

Résumé

Regulation theory (RT) first broke through in France forty years ago. Rejecting neo-classical axioms, it borrowed from Marxian, Keynesian and especially Institutional economics, without making any full commitment to any of them. In-itially, RT aimed to provide a macroeconomic analysis of great crises, which required its advocates to embrace a wider spectrum of social sciences. We discuss the episte-mological foundations of RT, focusing mainly on how other social sciences shaped the political economy premises of RT. Our main contribution lies in analyzing the nature and meaning of the relationships between the political economy of RT and social sciences, with a focus on sociological concepts, making RT an influential heterodox current. jelcodes · B52, P1, P16.
