Once upon a time in micrometers…tools, activities, and living spaces during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic in Cyprus
Résumé
In 1964, the English translation of Sergei Semenov’s pioneering technique of
analysis of the microscopic wear marks on ancient tools, ’rst published in Rus-
sian in 1957, made the di(usion of his work extremely rapid. Since the 1980’s,
this technique is in the mainstream of research on prehistoric stone tools. In the
past twenty-’ve years, studies have been carried out on lithic and bone tools
from three sites in Cyprus, dated to the Pre-pottery Neolithic, from the end of
the 10 th millennium BC to the mid-6 th millennium BC. )ese sites are Ayios
Tychonas-Klimonas, Parekklisha-Shillourokambos and Khirokitia-Vouni. Use-
wear studies showed that these implements were involved in a variety of subsis-
tence and craft activities. )e relations between the modes of production and
the functions of the tools were also addressed. At Khirokitia, the excavation and
recording methods provide an opportunity to study the spatial organization of
technical activities and gain insights into Neolithic daily life.
