"Commentary on Bott’s, "Family and Social Network"

Résumé

Elisabeth Bott studied in the sixties the relationships that twenty couples maintained with their social environment and the density of the network thus woven, as well as the spouses’ accounts and representations of family organization and the segregation of roles of husband and wife. Her hypothesis is that the degree of segregation in the role-relationship of husband and wife varies directly with the connectedness of the family’s social network. Here, I highlight the fundamental contributions of Elizabeth Bott’s work as well as their relevance in a world that has evolved in the social, cultural, and scientific domains. I will point out the shifts that her questioning may undergo today on the basis of an investigation that is different from hers. The lenses for observing these realities have also changed. Advances in network analysis and in cultural and gender studies, as well as the more recent emphasis on relational dynamics, all contribute to further explore her question and give new insights on Bott’s hypothesis. Here I explore the diversity of the positions of the partner in Ego's personal networks, in a longitudinal perspective, and the way it is related to gendered roles in the couple. This makes it possible to identify, with very precise cases, different processes of centralization of the partner in the network, and to show the social differences that impact these processes.
