Environmental amenities and the fetal and infant health during the first 1000 days of life: a literature review and theoretical contribution

Résumé

A growing body of evidences confirms that the first 1000 days of life period is a crucial window of neurologic and organic development that may be affected by several environmental stressors as maternal and fetal living conditions. Therefore, beyond the individual and contextual socio-economic level, the living environment “neighborhood” has emerged as an important determinant to investigate health disparities, particularly for pregnant women. Based on a literature review, we present a theoretical framework to describe different hypothetical pathways through which neighborhood may influence fetal and infant health during the first 1000 days of life focusing particularly on the environmental amenities. We suggest that, environmental amenities may affect the health of pregnant women and pregnancy issues that in turn influence the fetal and infant health during the first 1000 days of life. We posit that environmental amenities may influence a healthy pregnancy according to three main hypothetical pathways: psychological, (un)healthy behaviors and physiological disruption pathways. Finally, we discuss how different method could affect the strength of the associations and the accuracy of the conclusions. In spite of a few number of studies considered in the present work, findings tend to show that environmental amenities may play a role in the health of pregnant women and pregnancy outcomes.
