Jean Le Féron, héraldiste, entre manuscrits et imprimés

Résumé

A lawyer at the Parliament, Jean Le Féron devoted all his time to heraldry. He produced numerous handwritten armorials, which he offered to the king and to the Court, in the hope of obtaining a position as “king of arms” or “King’s historiographer”. The discovery of an unpublished contract shows that, as early as 1545, Jean Le Féron undertook to have the booksellers Jean Barbé and Vincent Sertenas publish a collection of heraldic Catalogues, illustrated with more than 400 woodcuts. The death of Barbé in 1547 prevented the publication. A manuscript version of the text, revised by the author in 1551, shows that the project was still in progress. It was finally printed b y Michel de Vascosan in 1555 and a copy prepared to be offered to King Henry II. This was followed in the same year by the publication of two other short treatises which enabled Jean Le Féron to obtain, at the end of his career, the office of “King’s historiographer” that he had long hoped for.
