Rennes, a climate-smart city ? Monitoring Urban Heat island using IOT
Rennes, une ville climato-intelligente ? - L’IoT au service du suivi des îlots de chaleur
Résumé
This article deals with the monitoring of the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon in Rennes using a network of sensors connected in LoRaWan. Since UHIs are discontinuous phenomena in time and space, they must be studied through permanent and high frequency measurements. With the options offered by the IoT (Internet of Things) and the drop in the cost of sensors, a technical solution integrating around a hundred measurement points has been deployed throughout the metropolitan area : the Rennes Urban Network. The Metropolis, keen to monitor and implement its Climate Plan, could thus rely on fine-scale climate modeling.
