Immersion in the Northern Irish conflict

Immersion dans le conflit nord-irlandais

Résumé

The Northern Irish conflict has its origins in a history dating back over three hundred years, in which two communities clashed. "The Troubles" as we know them at the end of the 20th century has evolved into a conflict between those who wish to free Ireland from its colonial past and those who wish to maintain ties with the British Crown. This division stems from the legacy of the Plantation period, when Britain allowed English and Scottish Protestants to settle in the north-east of the island. They brought a different culture and religion to the island from the natives. Religion became one of the main markers of identity. The history of Ireland and Christianity accompany and feed this rise in tensions between the two communities, which initially opposed the colonists to the colonised. This conflict seems to be based on a religious opposition. Is it then justified to divide the Northern Irish population into two religious communities? This book examines the religious dimension of the Northern Irish conflict as it is addressed in two contemporary plays, Stewart Parker's Pentecost (1987) and Anne Devlin's After Easter (1994). This book aims to highlight the humanist faith of the two Belfast playwrights through their attempt to re-shape contemporary Northern Irish theatre. It opens with a study of the role of religion and the Bible in Northern Irish theatre. The author uses the two plays to demonstrate how religion has fed into the political, economic and social realms, causing a confusion of identity for Northern Irish people. The two playwrights then refer to the Bible, a collection of sacred texts that allows them to find the heart of the Christian message. Their plays are full of biblical allusions, episodes and names adapted to the situation in Northern Ireland in the 20th century. In the second part of this book, Virginie Privas-Bréauté points out that this split in Ulster society gives rise in both works to a fragmentation which, by illustrating the crisis in the British province, is reminiscent of the didactic vocation of the epic theatre of the German playwright Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956). Stewart Parker and Anne Devlin do not offer a harmonious vision of Northern Ireland in their works. On the contrary, they highlight the fragmentation of a world in which human relationships are discordant. The deciphering of linguistic and paralinguistic codes in both works emphasises the need to deconstruct in order to reconstruct. The last part thus underlines the desire of both playwrights to redefine the Northern Irish identity. They invite the spectator to see that, more than religion, humanity is accused of having created this state of war, which it must remedy alone. They convey a humanist message of faith in an artistic way and, by borrowing from Brecht's theory of epic theatre, give their theatre a didactic dimension.
