Sanitation and Urbanism during the Beginning of the Indus Valley Civilization at Chanhu-daro (Sindh, Pakistan): New Contextualized Data

Résumé

Since 2015, the French Archaeological Mission in the Indus Basin (MAFBI) – directed by Dr Aurore Didier – in cooperation with Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Department, Government of Sindh and Department of Archaeology and Museum, Government of Pakistan, has undertaken new studies at Chanhu-daro (Sindh, Pakistan). This project – which relies on extensive excavations of architectural levels belonging to the beginning or first period of the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) (2600/2500-2300 BCE) - documented craft and residential quarters on a large scale in which new sanitation and water-related structures have been exposed such as drains, soaking jars and so-called ‘bathrooms’. These elements appeared to be essential for a better understanding of the urban network of the site. Indeed, since the discovery of the IVC, the early (and sudden?) use of hydraulic technologies and the development of a sophisticated water management system have always been considered as one its most IVC singular features. During the last decades, several relevant studies have been carried out on this topic (ex. Dr. M. Jansen’s studies on Mohenjo-daro and Dr R. S. Bisht’s studies on Dholavira). However, the knowledge of hydraulic techniques still does not entirely reflect the chronological and regional variations of the Indus cities. Through the study of new contextualized sanitation structures dated from the first Indus period, this paper will question the chronological and technological evolution of such types of water-related equipments at Chanhu-daro and their role and place in the urbanization process of the site. This study also opens the discussion on the developments and changes of the urban water management in the Greater Indus Valley over the long term.
