“The Yemeni Sources of Poetry and Music in the Sawt of the Gulf: The Role of the Arabian Diaspora in India”

Les sources yéménites de la poésie et de la musique dans le Sawt du Golfe. Le rôle de la diaspora en Inde.

Résumé

Some of the musical features of the Sawt urban tradition of the Gulf (Kuwait, Bahrain) can only be understood by a large historical and geographical detour, specially by the historical context of the Arabic and Yemeni diaspora in India since at least the 17th century. Thanks to an old tradition of colloquial sung poetry specific to Yemen since the 13th century, the homaynî, we can trace back the presence of Yemeni poets and musicians in Surat (Gudjerat) at the end of the Moghol time, along with merchants, mercenaries and religious men. Since that time and during the following centuries, Arab elites and laymen (from Hadramawt as well as Hejaz and the Gulf) mingled in Gudjerat, Hayderabad and other Indian cities, creating a diaspora with its own culture. One of the main features of this musical culture was the monoxyle lute, qanbûs, which spread back in the Gulf in the 19th century, and was abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century, but which left traces in the melodic and modal structures of the Sawt. Similarly, the homaynî poetry was until recently the only colloquial poetry sung in this context. This can be traced through a patient archeology of music and poetry in the Gulf.
