The Hidden Energies of Work Digitisation: A View from France Through the Use of Coworking Spaces

Résumé

Abstract There is no shortage of terms—collaborative economy, sharing economy or cognitive capitalism—to describe the new work practices brought about by the spreading digital economy. The French ‘Third place’ movement, reuniting diverse collaborative workplaces, has been claiming the search for more sustainable ways of living as a goal. Recently, numerous public funding programmes have been deployed to support such places. This chapter focusses on coworking spaces and their users to unfold energy consumption discourses and practices of coworkers, based on a survey conducted during 2017–2020 in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It demonstrates lack of awareness of the ‘hidden energies’ of work digitalisation. Though most coworkers display eco-friendly values, attitudes towards digital technology reflect divergences within the forms of appropriation of norms of transition towards sustainability.
