Dances of Self-Development as a Resource for Participatory Democracy

Résumé

This article explores the political dimensions of collective dance practices undertaken largely in the spirit of self-discovery and personal transformation: 5 Rhythms, Movement Medicine, Biodanza, Life Art Process, Sacred Circle Dance, and others. How should such practices be understood politically? What relationship, if any, do they have to participatory democracy? A first section describes the individual engagement, interpersonal encoun- ters, and conviviality characteristic of these collective dances. We then look at attendance rates and the way individuals participate in these practices. Finally, we consider the role collective dancing might play in participants’ political lives.
