Cock fight (gaguère) and lottery (borlette): what teachings about Haiti?
Gaguère (combat de coqs) et borlette (loterie)
Résumé
The earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince and the area around in January 2010 aggravated the global vulnerability of Haitian society. We intend to approach this society by two games: cockfight and lottery, locally called gaguère (sometimes gagaire) et borlette. These two games that are involving stakes are ubiquitous in Haiti, physically and symbolically. The purpose of the investigation conducted both in the capital and a rural area named Les Abricots, is to demonstrate that these two games are significant of Haitian space’s characteristics and are contributing to structure it at the same time. First, the games are existing by the exchanges that underlie its, at different scales of time and space; then, these games are shaping the economic life of the country; finally, borlette and gaguère are linked with metageographic logicals.
