Analysing informal and indirect participation to transnational activist networks: The case of antiauthoritarian feminists in Berlin and Montreal

Résumé

This chapter focus on the transnational dimension of feminist antiauthoritarian activism in Berlin and Montreal. By “antiauthoritarian” I mean anti-state, anticapitalist and antihierarchical activists who have their own counter-cultural spaces (e.g. bars, cultural centres, squat houses or collective housing) and engage in various progressive social movements (e.g. the alterglobalisation, migrant justice, housing rights or women’s movements). At first glance, feminist antiauthoritarian activists do not appear to be particularly transnational They value mainly local and community engagement, which they consider to be more authentic and concrete than involvement in transnational organisations and networks. Moreover, activists in Montreal and Berlin do not know each other as they rarely travel between the two cities. Yet, a comparison between these groups reveals that activists from Montreal and Berlin share similar ideas and practices.
