Les Jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este. The Juilliard Manuscript
Abstract
The lecture is about the Juilliard's manuscript of Liszt's Jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este (Année de pèlerinage III, Italy). Nicolas Dufetel will explain the context of composition of the three Années de pèlerinage and their dimension of "Gesamtkunstwerk" mixing music, literature and fine arts. The lecture will be illustrated with the original illustrations by F. Krätzschmer for the first 2 editions (Schott, Ruth Dana Collection, Juilliard). Beyind Aesthetics, Nicolas Dufetel will also explain the importance of philological details and the Gregorian influence on Liszt's music — that can be also seen in the Jeux d'eaux. Eventually, it will present a study of the manuscript, a copy annoated and corrected by Liszt, with the reconstruction of the first reading of 8 main passages performed by Duanduan Hao, a Juilliard School student and a PhD candidate at Sorbonne Université in Paris. The lecture will end with the complete performance of the final version of the work.
