The PSG Ultras’ annual commemoration of the 13 November 2015 terrorist attacks: a window on collective memory
Résumé
"The 2015 attacks in France elicited much political and media comment inviting all citizens to stand united in the face of terrorism. Each year since then, commemorations have been organized by different actors (the State, Paris City Hall, associations, the PSG Ultras …) to pay tribute to the victims. In contrast to the consensual images broadcast by the media, these ceremonies are an opportunity to express interpretations that do not conform to the official discourses. Based on ethnographic observations at several commemorations of the simultaneous attacks on 13 November 2015, we propose to explore the seeming homogeneity in discourses around the events, but equally the marginalization of particular groups – in this case, the PSG Ultras, who organize a procession in memory of the victims each year."
