Le Minier. Rapport de fouilles programmées 2022

Résumé

The 2022 archaeological campaign concerns the remains of the medieval silver production of Le Minier (Aveyron department, Viala-du-Tarn commune). This valley was subject to a long period of mining and metallurgical activity in the central Middle Ages (12th-15th centuries), based on the intense exploitation of several rich silver deposits, in particular that of Orzals in the second half of the 13th century. The works had a polarising effect in terms of land occupation with the creation of a dedicated permanent settlement, consecrated by a consulate, and stimulating in economic terms with the concentration of workshops and businesses. The archaeological survey, strictly speaking, is part of a collective interdisciplinary research project entitled Le Minier: histoire et archéologie des entreprises argentifères médiévales (coordination: Nicolas Minvielle Larousse). The 2022 excavation campaign extends the archaeological diagnosis carried out in 2021. The operations focused on the most relevant sectors, i.e. the Saliège mine and the Voltes mines and workshops. At Saliège, the excavations are underground and concern an abandoned logging site, filled in by alluvium and mining collapses. Progress was halted on a rising structure. At least part of the extracted material could be removed upwards and then started to be processed in the immediate vicinity of the work. Finally, other enrichment stages were probably carried out at the top of the mine, near the fields that yielded significant lead and zinc grades during prospecting. Questioned since 2019, the archaeological potential of the Saliège is no longer in doubt. In addition to the mine, processing areas or workshops are to be discovered at the bottom of the hill, and the halides need to be characterised and the overall chronology established. At Les Voltes, the mining works are gradually being revealed, for the moment in the form of open-cast workings: two filled-in trenches and a gallery departure. This campaign confirms the existence of mining workings on a long north-west/south-east oriented fault. These works were partly open-cast and partly underground. We do not know if they are continuous, but we are beginning to perceive their extent, considering the importance of the fillings and excavations. Completely erased on the surface, the pits covered a large part of the slope and explain the surface metal contamination identified during the surveys. The current topography of the slope is therefore late, which also explains the absence of mining anomalies on the Lidar survey. The main question remains unanswered, however: no obvious mine entrance has yet been identified. At Les Voltes, an ore preparation workshop was identified upstream of the mines during a survey in 2021. The survey was extended during the 2022 campaign, revealing at least five new workshops active in the second half of the 13th century. Two have masonry foundations and four are on posts. Although they have a relatively homogeneous architecture, are stratigraphically synchronous and chronologically contemporary, none of them are adjoining and no common facilities (drainage, etc.) were observed. All of them could therefore have been established independently of each other. The metal content of their soils distinguishes them, however, and reveals a process of ore preparation that may have been common: from the arrival of mixed materials to the gradual separation of galena and sphalerite, the former retained, the latter rejected. Just as their construction may have been contemporary, their abandonment also seems to have been common at the end of the 13th century, followed by an advanced recovery of materials and a process of levelling the site. The economic abandonment was probably linked to the abandonment of the mines, which prevents a fuller understanding of the activities that took place there due to the absence of furniture or other structures and tools that the workers took with them. Finally, two new dates were carried out on coals contained in the fillings of the Cantamerle mine, located near the village of Le Minier. They are consistent with the first half of the 14th century. The charcoal dated in 2021 to the late Middle Ages therefore probably comes from the remobilisation of an old wood. Without ruling out earlier phases, these two new dates place the last workings of this mine in the late Middle Ages.
