Résumé

What remains of a battle in the place where it took place? Not much, certainly, even if the great battles of the industrial era leave a more obvious spatial imprint, from environmental damage to the great monuments of later times. And yet, battle sites of all eras have aroused interest, curiosity and even infatuation. A specific kind of tourism has developed, whose roots go back a long way. In the eyes of these visitors, the battlefields bear an irreducible part of the memory of war, and this memory is increasingly inscribed there through multiple social, cultural, political and educational uses. In this volume, some twenty researchers explore the history of places of memory, from the 16th century to the present day. Their articles vary in scale and approach, taking readers from the Italian wars to the Pacific, and from Quebec to Lorraine, via Portugal and Normandy.
