Introduction: Approaching the Spatiality of Popular Music Through Geographical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Résumé

Over the last few decades, a rich body of literature has explored the importance of music to understand the spatial dimensions of society. These geographic approaches to music are varied, depending on the background of the researchers. While music has generated a substantial interest among geographers, scholars in other disciplines have also developed related spatial perspectives on music. These multiple approaches to the geographies of popular music are the ones that our book series bring together. This volume is the first installment of a three-part book series, New Geographies of Music. In this chapter, we will explore these perspectives, discuss how they provide a multitude of lenses through which we can study of popular music, and investigate how the five chapters in this book contribute to the advancement of music geography.
