Jews, prostitutes and lepers. Living on the margins in the town of Salon (France) during the 13th century
Juifs, prostituées et lépreux : vivre à la marge dans la ville de Salon au XIIIe siècle
Résumé
The thirteenth century statutes of the town of Salon, in Provence, has a vexatious paragraph that bounds Jews, prostitutes and lepers to buy the food they have touched on the market stalls. Beginning with the salonian corpus, and then theology and canon law, the concept of “marginality” as applied to these three groups is considered through the topoi implied by being sidelined, whether by choice or by necessity, in a medieval perspective. By “marginality” very diverse legal and political realities are hidden and will be highlight by comparing the specificity of Salon with neighboring cities.
