Caused motion in Swedish as (2)L1 : the influence of typological factors in monolingual and biligual initial acquisition

Résumé

Motion events in Swedish as (2)L1 : the influence of typological factors in monolingual and bilingual initial acquisition In the interface of language and cognition, the area of the representation of space, especially motion events, has been thoroughly explored and debated since Talmy (2000, 2003, 2006, 2013) proposed a typological distinction between satellite and verbframed languages. In this model, Germanic languages typically encodes Manner in the verb and Path in verbal satellites (e.g. run down) whereas Romance languages mainly encode Path in the verb and Manner is optionally expressed in a prepositional phrase and gerunds (e.g. descendre en courant). Talmy’s initial binary typology has been significantly refined and developed by Maya Hickmann and collaborators, (e.g. (Hickmann, M. (2012), Hendricks & Hickmann, M. (2015, 2018). Demagny (2015), Hickmann, Hendriks, Harr & Bonnet (2018)). Generally speaking, language-specific constraints seem to determine the expression of motion in L1, but unlike the initial binary opposition. Hendricks & Hickmann (2015) Slobin (2006), Demagny (2015) and others have defined two kinds of motion (caused and voluntary) and suggest a scalar rather than dichotomous perspective. Finally several researches show that languages can be defined as both satellite and verbframed, or not fit into either of the two cases proposed by Talmy (see e.g. Anastasio 2018) The study presented here is situated in Hickmann’s line of research on the development of motion events in children. It is divided into two parts, the first one being focused here. The expression of space in Swedish is an unexplored area (but see Hellerstedt 2013). Swedish is a Germanic language that is close to both German and English, two typically satellite-framed languages, often studied in the realm of Talmy’s theory. The first part thus consists in defining the specific properties of Swedish for the expression of movement in space. To this end, two experiments based on cartoons designed and used by Maya Hickmann and her team - one on caused movement and the other on voluntary movement - with children of different age groups (3, 4,6,8 and 10 years old) and a group of adults were carried out. Only the caused motion experiment is presented in this poster. The coding of semantic density and information loci revealed in Swedish L1 showed similarities especially with German L1 (Oschenbauer 2010) and, in a qualitative analysis, some differences were observed, such as the use of a “dummy” verb to express a specific type of caused events through all the age classes, diminishing in the 10 year old group. The bulk of research on movement in space has focused on first language acquisition and lately also on adult L2 (see e.g. Oschenbauer (2010), (Demagny (2013, 2015), Arslangul, Hendriks, Hickmann. & Demagny (2018)), but less on bilingual children (except for Engemann 2012). The second part of the project presented here concerns simultaneously (2L1) bilingual children (Swedish and French). Studying the development of two typologically diverging representations of space - French being a verb-framed language and Swedish satellite-framed – can shed light on how language structures affect mental representations of space, given that structural determinants and cognitive determinants develop in parallel in the two languages of the child. In this respect, little is known on whether one language combination is “easier” than another, i.e. the role of typological distance. The results from a pilot study on the bilingual children (Garant & Kihlstedt 2013) showed low or no transfer of lexicalization between the children’s two systems. However, a certain delay in the development as compared to monolingual Swedish peers was observed.
