The contribution offers a new reading and interpretation of the motive of the spiral in some illustrated liturgical manuscripts from the early Middle Ages until the 13th century, foremost in one painting from the Rothschild Canticles (13th century) which illustrates the vision of God received by Ezechiel at the beginning of his prophetic book, and focusing on the very nature of God as a spiral or a whirlwind. The author argues that the iconography of the spiral in these illuminations corresponds to the visual transposition of the energy given by God and Christ to the believers and which constitutes an anticipation of the form of the liturgical monstrance in the late Middle Ages.
