Vulnerability and adaptation strategies of summer ski in Zermatt & Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Résumé

The rapidly diminishing glaciers in the European Alps, particularly affecting summer ski resorts like Zermatt and Saas-Fee, pose substantial challenges to tourism. These resorts face heightened vulnerability due to climate change, impacting lift operators and hotel arrivals during peak seasons. Despite the crucial role of summer skiing for these destinations, adaptation strategies remain primarily reactive, focusing on managing glacier and lift infrastructure. However, these strategies fall short in addressing the profound impact of climate change on summer skiing. The research underscores the pressing need for more forward-thinking and transformative approaches, such as diversification of activities and exploring snow-independent skiing, to ensure the sustainability of these resorts amidst dwindling opportunities for glacier skiing.
