Résumé

Historians and philosophers of mathematics rely primarily on written evidence to discuss the knowledge and practices produced or put into play by actors—for sure, we should not forget that they also sometimes rely on objects, like calculating machines, but including these in the scope of the essay would lead me too far here. The point of this chapter is to offer a critical reflection on the nature of the written evidence on which historians and philosophers qua observers draw to this effect.
