Ceramic net weights from the Albalat site (Cáceres)
The location of the fortified settlement of Albalat (Extremadura) on the banks of the Tagus River facilitated the exploitation of fishing resources by its inhabitants. Fish, and possibly terrapins, would be captured using nets placed transversely in the riverbed (trammel nets or" tresmayos"). Trammel nets were used in the region until a few decades ago (Rodríguez Arroyo, 2012). The shallow depth of the river at this point, due to the presence of the ford that gives the site its name (Majâḍat al-Balâṭ or the ford of the road), would facilitate the use of this type of fishing gear.
