Abstract
Edmond Edmont traveled through the Gallo-Romance domain between 1897 and 1901 in order to carry out 639 dialectal surveys which would lead to the publication of the Linguistic Atlas of France from 1902 to 1910. After reviewing some important elements of his biography, we will strive to restore the truth about the material conditions of these investigations and in particular those concerning the means of transport and the routes. Then we will show that it is possible to identify the witnesses and finally we will make a sociological analysis of them by gender, age and professions by projecting them on distribution maps.
Edmond Edmont a parcouru le domaine gallo-roman entre 1897 et 1901 afin d’effectuer 639 enquêtes dialectales qui aboutiront à la publication de l’Atlas linguistique de la France de 1902 à 1910. Après avoir repris quelques éléments importants de sa biographie, nous nous attacherons à rétablir la vérité sur les conditions matérielles de ces enquêtes et notamment celles concernant les moyens de transport et les trajets. Puis nous montrerons qu’il est possible d’identifier les témoins et enfin nous en ferons une analyse sociologique par genre, âge et professions en les projetant sur des cartes de répartition.
