Three Important Monuments of Nakhichevan

Trois monuments importants du Nakhitchévan

Résumé

Until its entire destruction at the end of the 20th century - the beginning of the 21st century, the Christian Armenian heritage of Nakhichevan numbered one hundred and ten monasteries and churches. Three of them are described and briefly analysed in the present article: St Thomas (1694) and St Christopher (1675) of Agulis, and the Holy Mother of God of Tseghna (1683). These three monuments illustrate the impetuous revival of Armenian architecture in the 17th century, after a long period of ordeals. It is characterised by a combination of Armenian architectural tradition and borrowings from western European iconography and Persian painted and sculpted decoration.
