The development of negation in children aged 0 ;10-4 ;00: a multimodal perspective
Résumé
In this seminar, I will present my research on the development of negation in children under the age of four within parent-child dyadic interactions recorded at home. Using a multimodal approach, my work examines how children express negation from 0;10 to 4;02. The presentation will focus on three specific studies: 1. the multimodal development of negation in monolingual and bilingual children: This study investigates the multimodal expressions of negation in monolingual French and English children, as well as in French-Italian and French-French Sign Language (LSF) bilingual children. 2. a multimodal analysis of holophrastic “non” in French-speaking children: This study analyzes the synchronization of gesture and prosody in French children’s production of single-utterance “non” from 1;06 to 2;06. 3. Multimodality and Complexity in children’s negations: The present study explores the interplay between modalities of expression (speech, gestures, vocalizations and body movements) in the construction of negation to account for the complexity of language. I will also focus on the role of co-speech gestures in children. This talk will provide insights into the intricate ways children develop the ability to express negation. It will also raise questions regarding the analysis of the development of negation in children using longitudinal data and a multimodal approach.
