The Maid's Metamorphosis, directed by Perry Mills for Edward's Boys, Théâtre Jean-Claude Carrière and Salle du prêt gratuit (École Nationale Supérieure d’Art Dramatique, ENSAD), Montpellier, 26 and 28 March 2024
Résumé
This review offers what is probably the first known record of a production of Maid’s Metamorphosis, a play published in 1600 which was performed by the Children of Paul’s. This production was directed by Perry Mills for Edward’s Boys, an all-boys company of King Edward VI School, Stratford-upon-Avon. It was performed in Montpellier in two different venues. The review considers the aesthetics of the performance, the shaping ethics of ensemble, the exploration of gender as a question of identity, and audience reception. The play is currently being edited for publication by Agnès Lafont and Lindsay Ann Reid.
