Measuring competition on a market and limits: Case study through the European rail freight market

Résumé

In this lecture, methods to measure competition on a market are discussed. Based on industrial economic theory, an overview of indicators commonly used in the different transport markets (rail, road, maritime, air) is given. Their limits will be developed especially through the case study of the European rail freight market.
In a first part, the method to define the market from a product and geographic point of view will be presented. Then the different available indicators to assess competition will be reviewed. To finish, their limits in terms of data and ability to give a real picture of competition are highlighted.
Finally, competencies to retain from this lecture are the following:
- Knowledge of methods to define a market scope;
- Knowledge of indicators to measure a level of competition on a market;
- Knowledge of data needed for indicators.
