Enjoy Socialist Paradise
Abstract
Since the crisis and the famine of the mid-1990s and the resulting process of marketization, North Korea has experienced profound socioeconomic changes. In Pyongyang, the capital, these changes have resulted in the development of new modern residential districts, but also new social and cultural infrastructure, including leisure parks. Based on the concept of sustainable urban development, this chapter argues that the recent augmentation of leisure parks in Pyongyang has not only improved North Koreans’ lives and satisfied their demand, but also created new economic opportunities while making the city greener.
