Introduction to the role of urban narratives: governing the (re)making of cities

Résumé

As its title suggests, this book is concerned with urban narratives, usually understood as a combination of tales, images and discourses dealing with city marketing and branding issues. Such narratives have typically been analysed by urban geographers as a key-tool used by cities in order to attract investment capital and the so-called "creative class" in the context of global and neoliberalised capitalism. Urban narratives are underpinned by the objective of "selling places" with a focus on various realms of public policies: typically planning, culture and the local economy. While acknowledging the importance of marketing and branding issues, the principal contribution of the book lies in its investigation of the (re)making of cities through narration, paying careful attention in detailed case studies to the actors who produce the narratives, along with the balance and conflicts of power and the (re)development of the cities.
