Jews and their relations with Christians in Pre-Islamic South Arabia (fourth-sixth century)

Résumé

The evidence from material culture on Jewish-Christian relations in South Arabia (whose territory corresponds roughly to modern Yemen) consists mainly of inscriptions, engraved in stone, dating from the fourth to the sixth centuries CE. The question of Jewish-Christian relations will thus be discussed on the basis of South Arabian inscriptions, which are primary sources, contemporary with the events, and it will then be compared and completed with accounts found in external sources such as historiographic and hagiographic sources, and Arab Islamic tradition, relating especially to the dramatic events of the sixth century. Quite a lot has been written on Jews and monotheism in ancient South Arabia. I nevertheless think it is useful to ask the question: "Who were the Jews of ancient South Arabia?" Before trying to answer, I would like to sketch out the monotheism of South Arabia. I will first present what we know about the Jews and then discuss their relations with Christians, especially the conflicts of the sixth century.
