Aelius Aristides' praise of Rome can be compared to the praise of Alexandria in Book I of Pseudo-Callisthenes' Life of Alexander the Great. These texts illustrate two different ways of perceiving hellenism in the Roman Empire: one which uses the categories of classical hellenism to the profit of Rome, and another which creates a universalizing hellenism encompassing the legacy of other cultures.
