Mathematisation of the Science of Motion and the Birth of Analytical Mechanics : A Historiographical Note

Résumé

The notion of mathematisation is distinguished from that of application of mathematics to a natural or social science. This distinction is illustrated by means of the example of the science of motion from Aristotle to the middle of 18th century. The same example will also be used to illustrate another topic, namely when analytical mechanics was born.
