Production, circulation et échange de documents: une observation des pratiques

Abstract : We report on the way French environmental actors use the Internet and NICT (New Information and Communication Technology) by collecting and analyzing their discourses and observing their practices, particularly in producing websites. The people we met were unanimous in thinking that NICT are important and necessary to their activity and that they represent a positive input in terms of ease of communication and access to information. Nevertheless, they all describe the limits of these new technologies because of technical and financial difficulties. More important, designing and maintaining a website in a complex and technical field demands many skills and requires collaborative work by many persons with complementary abilities. Our observations show that interpersonal exchanges are very important in these activities: being able to discuss, to offer mutual assistance or to give some advice is as important as possessing recent computers, a high-speed connection and high-performance software. We also observed that during the production of a Website, “old” media are still very present and useful: newspapers and magazines, press files, dictionaries, maps... More generally, we were able to show how environmental discourse circulate through classical and numeric media.
